Wahl (1999)

Choice is a classic satirical comedy that's over two decades old, but it still holds up today thanks to the astute writing and superb performances of Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon. The film centers on talented know-it-all Tracy Flick (Witherspoon) who attempts to run for student body president, but her path to election is cut short when the school's social studies teacher (Broderick) launches an underground campaign against her. that means supporting a rival candidate and rigging the vote.

This 2016 documentary is based on the works of American writer James Baldwin and more specifically on his unfinished manuscript Remember This House. I Am Not Your Negro, narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, takes an uncompromising look at the history of racism in America. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary and won a BAFTA in the same category. I Am Not Your Black may not be the prettiest watch on this list, but it is arguably the most important.

If Beale Street Could Talk (2018)

Director Barry Jenkins followed up his Best Picture-winning Moonlight with the equally stunning If Beale Street Could Talk. Emotionally charged from the start, it follows the tragic story of childhood love Tish and Fonny in New York in the 1970s. Their romantic bliss is shattered when Fonny is falsely accused of sexual assault and Tish must prove her innocence. Regina King co-stars and won an Oscar for her powerful performance as Tish's strong-willed mother. Coincidentally, If Beale Street Could Talk is based on a novel by James Baldwin, whose writings are the subject of the aforementioned I Am Not Your Negro.

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

What else is there to say about Raiders of the Lost Ark? The first Indiana Jones film is a mushy adventure that's as popular today as it was when it was released more than four decades ago. In case you haven't heard of this classic film, Harrison Ford plays an archaeologist on a quest to find the long-lost Ark of the Covenant. Rec is a Spanish idiot who will make you sleep with the lights on for days. Rosmarins Baby (1968)

Rosemary's Baby is one of the most famous psychological horror films of all time, and while it may be slow at over two hours long, it's a stomach-turning finale. It stars Mia Farrow as Rosemary, a young woman who recently moved into a new apartment building with her husband, actor Guy. There they quickly meet the elderly couple next door and Rosemary becomes pregnant. Everything seems to be going well until strange events start to scare the young mother-to-be and for some reason the neighbors seem to take a special interest in her pregnancy.

Sorry to bother you (2018)

A surreal comedy from the mind of Boots Riley, Sorry to Bother You stars many top talent including LaKeith Standfield, Tessa Thompson, Terry Crews, Patton Oswalt and Steven Yeun. It follows Cassius "Cash" Green, a young telemarketer who becomes embroiled in a corporate conspiracy that forces him to choose between climbing the corporate ladder or fighting for a just cause. Serpico (1973)

Directed by legendary director Sidney Lumet, Serpico is a crime biopic in which Al Pacino takes on the role of Frank Serpico, an NYPD officer who risked his own safety to expose corruption within the force. Serpico is a tight neo-noir drama that cleverly ups the ante and draws you into its riveting plot throughout its two-hour runtime. Pacino won a Golden Globe for his performance, and the film deserves to sit alongside the greats of the detective genre.
